John Stevenson
poet
with
note pad
taking orders
from the river
spring flooding—
who knows what hope
is a false hope,
which bridge
won't hold
my wedding ring
and some old photos;
a wooden cask
with a cleverly carved top
that closes snugly
a former enemy
has written me
a long letter
about the suicide
of a mutual friend
a news photograph—
i look at the condemned man
and think "me"
at the man with the gun
and think "we"
