this love of the Maximilian sunflowers surrounding my remote cabin lies not in the mass of golden blooms stacked tightly on top of the eight foot stems; nor in the long sessile blue green leaves growing alternately up the plants; nor in the artichoke taste of the roots; nor even when the migrating monarch butterfly stops to feed on the pollen; but in the way their sound carries in the gentle wind in this dawn light

Dru Philippou lives in Taos, New Mexico. Her work has appeared in numerous journals and awards include the Scorpion Prize: A tie for the best haiku or senryu of issue VI:I 2006, Roadrunner Haiku Journal; twice nominee for the Pushcart Prize, 2006; and an honorable mention in the Robert Spiess Memorial Haiku Contest, 2008.
