Kasen : Laughter Rising

laughter rising
as the ribbons grow shorter
maypole dance

Celia Stuart-Powles

the sea-scented wind
through ripening rye

Eiko Yachimoto

rainshowers ahead
blue paint
splashed across the road

Susan Delphine Delaney

pattern half-finished
the plaid cat bolts…

celia

peek-a-boo moon:
traces of dream
bathe my pillow

Johnye Strickland

thud, on the thatched roof;
a persimmon

eiko

* * * *

bonfire night
youth beg
‘a penny for the guy’

susan

Odysseus waits
inside the horse

celia

crossing state lines
the gun moll
blows a bubble

johnye

two rings and his initials
on her left breast

‘a caramel macchiato’
he orders for her

susan

the moon freezes
Lake Mashu tonight

eiko

startling the tourists…
the sharp snap of the swan’s
tail feathers

johnye

we sent off the Pontiff
with nine absolutions

susan

fingerprints and wrinkles
“De imitatione
Christi"

eiko

sun salutation
stiff but earnest

celia

in the lee
of the cherry:
a pink whirlwind

susan

froggy went a-courtin’
and he did ride, um-hmm

johnye

spring lullaby
new mother checks
twin name tags again

celia

Mount St. Helens,
I bow as we fly past you

johnye

sidewalk puddle
reflecting a buttermilk sky
and a wishing star

susan

tanabata streamers with
gold and silver grains of sand

eiko

through the bamboo gate
evening glories offered
on a fan

celia

“all mimsy were the borogroves”
love, we collapse giggling

susan

Lara’s theme
the ambience
of social turmoil

eiko

the UN approves peace keepers
for Darfur

johnye

shrouded in snow
at the edge of the forest
a herd of deer

celia

a hamlet on the salt road
bustles with kabuki

eiko

eating squash soup
above the cornfield
fat yellow moon

celia

a dragonfly leads the deaf boy
into evening glow

johnye

* * * *

weight of the fog,
on the tips of the saw grass
granddaddy longlegs

johnye

on Mendeleev’s faith
a space reserved for gallium

susan

imagine
there is no hell nor heaven
it is easy to do

sampling by eiko

digging the garden
bluejay on the fence

celia

dogwood trail
he trembles at blossom-clouds
on the hill

johnye

beach-combing
a seashell with a pearl
