Haiku ~ Esther Theiler

first skink of spring
crushed - the dawn
on its silver belly
  ears plastered by the rain
  the dead koala
its arm still slung over a branch
each Friday on my walk
the cleaner at the window
of the rich house
  thirsty afternoon
a little less of the sky now
  in my glass
even the new faux Gothic pile
has cracks under the eaves
where baby birds scrabble

Esther Theiler lives on the outskirts of Melbourne in the south of Australia. Her haiku has been published in Simply Haiku, paper wasp, World Haiku Review, Modern Haiku and others and she also writes stories and other forms of poetry.
