Kasen, Orion's Bellybutton

peeking
through buttermilk clouds
orion's bellybutton

a glowing fireplace
the scent of popcorn

laughing out loud
wine making kits
in a dry county

a tipsy parade
of prairie katydids

day moon
bobbing for apples
a pirate jostles an elf

the garden layered
with new straw

* * *

at dawn
in a Zen monastery
Buddha wearing dewy frost

surface reflections
as lovers rock the boat

the couple who came
for tongue piercings
leave not speaking

at the closing lines
the pen tears the letter

bassoon solo,
the matriarch goes out
in style

the long low coo
of the mourning dove

crouching cat
the summer moon
in its eyes

Nomo tornado sucks the stands
All Star Night

empty lecture room:
the earthly globe
half lighted

birthday in hospice
his wife blows out the candles

final touches
sugared blossoms
between the petit fours

dividing the swarm
a third for the new queen

* * *

soap bubbles,
children explore
the castle wall

humpty dumpty
had a great fall

I am the eggman
I am the walrus
why don't I take a break

called to active duty
the girlfriend cries

Salvation Army bell,
faces blur
in the winter haze

hot cereal
the old man smiles

waking
to the taste of coffee
on his lips

the moving lace pattern
on her habutae gown

pouring rice
into her suitcase
the bridesmaids

I see, in the rain
the long line for a taxi

harvest moon
bales of alfalfa
stacked in the barn

the steps of the hora dancers
closer and closer

* * *

approaching storm
popping kelp bladders
on cold sand

from the vacant aquarium
a phantom splash

museum case
the bones
of a cavalry camel

remaining snow
the shape begins to appear

chanting the mantra,
pear blossoms drift past
the open window

in a tea drop
the clearing April sky
