Margarita Engle

Margarita Engle is a botanist and the author of two novels, Singing to Cuba (Arte Publico Press) and Skywriting (Bantam), as well as numerous shorter works published in a wide variety of anthologies and international literary journals. Her most recent chapbook of haiku is Dreaming Sunlight (Feather Books, U.K.). She is currently completing a chapbook of children's poems for Elin Grace Publishing.

--of dreams where all
--the clocks
--tell different times
--you and I are real

driving
--this old country road
--we are carried
--forward in space
--backwards in time

only after
--I injured my hands
--did I notice
--their shape
--human wings

walking
--side by side
--the rhythm
--of our footsteps matches
--the rhythm of our words

entering
--a used bookstore
--I leave
--my sense of time
--at the door

when
--did the strange pages
--of my dream journal
--begin filling themselves
--with visions and daydreams?
