new year's day
last night's snow
heavy on the trees

first wildflowers
the striped tail
of a garter snake

a seagull
27 miles from shore
the continent begins

lingering heat . . .
a few loose grapes
at the bag's bottom

winter storm
a ladder left outside
has fallen down
