Cathy Drinkwater Better is the author of 30 published books, including three collections of poetry; her poems have appeared in journals in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, and Japan. Better’s long-running and award-winning humor column appears monthly in magazines published in Maryland and Pennsylvania. As Cathy Walker (her married name), she edits The Medical Bulletin, a group of newspapers for physicians in the Maryland, Washington, DC, and northern Virginia areas.

summer heat
even here, even now
I remember you

washing my feet
before bed -tonight
we make love

buffeted by the wind---
ice floes traverse the canal
with the current

overslept again
the black cat's
rasping meow
